Second Blog Post

For this weeks post I decided to write on the song “Long John”. This song was sung by slaves and anyone else being used for manual labor in south. While you are playing the song, the first thing you may notice is the beat that they sing to. This is an easy beat to replicate during any form of work. Whether it is while building fence or while constructing the railroad. I believe in the song it is made to replicate the sound of hammers hitting the rail road ties. I believe that this started a trend for songs in the south. Not only would it give them something to sing about while working but they found ways to talk about escaping slavery without anyone knowing. The next thing I noticed in the song is the call and response method of writing music. This method is effective at getting a message stuck in your head. It is also an easy way to sing if you haven’t heard a song before as you just say what the person before you said. There really only needs to be one person that knows what the lyrics to the song are. This song had a great influence on the future happiness and freedom of slaves.

  1. This was one of the songs that stood out to me in class. I like the way you break down all aspects of this song! The call and response makes the song a lot more stronger with the sounds of the other workers. This is a powerful song that allowed the slaves/workers to express how they felt. It's beautiful seeing people express their feelings through song! Great job!
